About Pyrite

Pyrite is a brassy golden metallic mineral known as "Fool's Gold" for its striking resemblance to real gold. Far from foolish, this powerful stone has been treasured throughout history for its ability to attract wealth, enhance willpower, and provide strong protective energy. Its cubic crystal structure and mirror-like metallic lustre make it one of the most visually striking minerals in the world.

The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word "pyr" meaning fire — because it creates sparks when struck against metal or flint. Ancient peoples used Pyrite to start fires, and this fiery energy is still very much alive in its metaphysical properties today.

Metaphysical Properties

Pyrite is one of the most powerful stones for manifestation, abundance, and personal power. It activates the Solar Plexus Chakra — the seat of willpower, confidence, and action — helping you step into your full potential and attract the success you deserve.

Known as a stone of luck and prosperity, Pyrite is said to attract wealth and abundance while shielding you from negative energy and environmental pollutants. It encourages you to overcome fear and take bold action toward your goals, making it an essential ally for entrepreneurs, creatives, and anyone building something meaningful.

Pyrite also has a strong protective quality. It creates an energetic shield around the aura, deflecting negative energy, manipulation, and psychic attack. Its grounding Earth energy keeps you anchored while its fiery Solar energy keeps you motivated and focused.

How to Use Pyrite

  • Place a Pyrite cluster on your desk or in your workspace to attract business success and boost productivity
  • Put Pyrite near your front door or cash register to invite prosperity and abundance into your space
  • Carry tumbled Pyrite in your wallet or pocket to attract financial opportunities
  • Meditate with Pyrite on your Solar Plexus to ignite confidence, willpower, and personal power
  • Use Pyrite in abundance crystal grids alongside Citrine and Green Aventurine
  • Place a Pyrite sun on your altar as a symbol of solar energy, success, and radiant abundance

Caring for Your Pyrite

  • Cleansing: Pyrite is NOT water-safe — it can rust and deteriorate when exposed to moisture. Cleanse with sage smoke, sound bowls, or moonlight only.
  • Charging: Pyrite loves sunlight for brief periods. You can also charge it on a selenite plate or bury it in dry soil overnight.
  • Storage: Keep Pyrite completely dry. Store in a dry environment away from humidity. It can tarnish over time if exposed to moisture and air.
  • Handling: Handle with care — Pyrite can oxidise and create sulfuric acid when exposed to prolonged moisture. Wash hands after handling raw specimens.

Where Pyrite is Found

Pyrite is one of the most common minerals on Earth, forming in a wide variety of geological environments. However, gem-quality specimens with perfect cubic crystals are found in only a handful of locations.

  • Peru: World-renowned for enormous, perfectly formed cubic crystals — the finest Pyrite specimens in the world
  • Spain (Navajún): Famous for geometrically perfect cubes embedded in matrix rock, prized by collectors worldwide
  • Italy: Beautiful pyritohedron crystals with 12 pentagonal faces
  • USA (Illinois, Colorado): Pyrite suns and disc formations unique to Illinois coal mines
  • Russia & China: Large deposits used for industrial and collector specimens

Pyrite Through History

Pyrite has been used since prehistoric times. Ancient peoples struck it against flint to create fire — making it one of humanity's earliest tools. The Incas polished Pyrite into mirrors for scrying and divination, and ancient Greeks and Romans used it in jewellery and amulets.

During the Gold Rush era, Pyrite's resemblance to gold fooled many prospectors, earning it the nickname "Fool's Gold." However, experienced miners knew the difference — real gold is soft and malleable, while Pyrite is hard and brittle.

Victorian jewellers used Pyrite (called marcasite) to create intricate, sparkling jewellery that remains fashionable today. In modern crystal healing, Pyrite is celebrated as one of the most powerful stones for manifestation, abundance, and protection.
