About Feldspar

Feldspar is the most abundant mineral group on Earth, making up over 60% of the planet's crust. Far from being ordinary, this remarkable family includes some of the most beloved and visually stunning crystals in the mineral kingdom β€” from the ethereal glow of Moonstone to the iridescent flash of Labradorite and the vivid turquoise of Amazonite.

The name Feldspar comes from the German words "Feld" (field) and "Spath" (a type of mineral), reflecting its widespread occurrence in rocks and soils worldwide. Despite its abundance, the gem-quality varieties of Feldspar are prized for their extraordinary optical phenomena, including adularescence, labradorescence, and aventurescence.

Feldspar Varieties

The Feldspar family includes some of the most iconic crystals in the mineral kingdom. Each variety carries its own unique energy, appearance, and metaphysical properties:

Metaphysical Properties

As a family, Feldspar crystals are deeply connected to self-discovery, creativity, and the uncovering of hidden truths. They are known to help you detach from the old and usher in new beginnings, making them powerful allies during times of transition and transformation.

Feldspar crystals are said to enhance self-awareness and self-love, helping you recognise and utilise your unique gifts and talents. They encourage independence and confidence, supporting you to find unconventional and exciting ways to achieve your goals.

Each variety carries its own specific energy β€” Moonstone connects to the divine feminine and lunar cycles, Labradorite awakens magic and psychic abilities, Amazonite soothes the heart and throat, and Sunstone radiates joy and personal power.

How to Use Feldspar

  • Place Moonstone or Labradorite on your altar during full moon rituals to amplify lunar energy
  • Carry Amazonite in your pocket to support honest communication and calm anxiety
  • Meditate with Labradorite to access deeper intuition and psychic awareness
  • Wear Sunstone jewellery to boost confidence, vitality, and personal power
  • Place any Feldspar variety on your Third Eye or Crown Chakra during meditation
  • Use Moonstone in new moon intention-setting rituals for new beginnings

Caring for Your Feldspar

  • Cleansing: Moonlight is ideal for all Feldspar varieties. Sage smoke, sound bowls, and selenite plates are also excellent. Avoid prolonged water exposure as some varieties can be sensitive.
  • Charging: Full moon charging is especially powerful. Sunstone can be briefly charged in morning sunlight. Avoid prolonged sun exposure for Moonstone as it can affect the adularescence.
  • Storage: At Mohs 6–6.5, Feldspar is moderately hard. Store separately from harder stones like Quartz (Mohs 7) to prevent scratching.
  • Handling: Feldspar has perfect cleavage in two directions β€” handle with care to avoid chipping or splitting along cleavage planes.

Feldspar is found on every continent and forms in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. Gem-quality varieties are found in specific locations known for their exceptional optical properties.

Feldspar Through History

Feldspar minerals have been used by humans for thousands of years. Ancient Romans believed Moonstone was formed from solidified moonbeams and associated it with their lunar goddess Diana. In India, Moonstone has been considered sacred for millennia and is still used in traditional jewellery today.

Labradorite was discovered in Labrador, Canada in 1770 by Moravian missionaries, though Inuit peoples had known of the stone for centuries, believing it contained the Northern Lights trapped within the rock. Finnish Labradorite, known as Spectrolite, was discovered during World War II and is prized for its full-spectrum colour play.

Amazonite was used by ancient Egyptians and was found in Tutankhamun's tomb. The Amazonians of South America were said to have adorned their shields with the stone, giving it its name β€” though no Amazonite deposits have ever been found in the Amazon region.
