Where Moonstone is Found
Moonstone forms in igneous and metamorphic rocks. The adularescence (blue flash) is caused by light scattering between microscopic layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar.
Major deposits: Sri Lanka (finest quality), India, Madagascar, Myanmar, Australia, and USA.
Sri Lankan Moonstone is considered the finest, displaying strong blue adularescence. Indian Moonstone often shows rainbow or multi-colored flash.
Moonstone Through History
Moonstone has been revered for thousands of years. Ancient Romans believed it was formed from solidified moonbeams. In India, it's considered sacred and is traditionally displayed on yellow cloth (a sacred color).
Hindu mythology associates Moonstone with the moon god Chandra. It was believed to bring good fortune and was a traditional wedding gift to ensure a happy marriage. Ancient Greeks and Romans associated it with their lunar deities.
In Art Nouveau jewelry, Moonstone was extremely popular. Today, it remains beloved for its mystical properties and connection to lunar energy, intuition, and the divine feminine.
