Caring for Your Opal

  • Cleansing: Water-safe but use caution - Opal contains water and can crack if dried out. Brief rinse is okay. Prefer sound bowls, sage smoke, or moonlight for cleansing.
  • Charging: Moonlight only - NEVER use sunlight or heat as Opal can crack and lose water content. Store with a damp cloth to maintain moisture.
  • Storage: Soft at Mohs 5.5-6.5 and very delicate. Store separately in a padded container with slight moisture. Avoid dry environments.
  • Durability: Very fragile and sensitive to temperature changes, dryness, and chemicals. Handle with extreme care. Can crack or craze if dried out.

Where Opal is Found

Opal forms from silica-rich water seeping through rock crevices and cavities. As water evaporates, silica deposits form Opal. The play-of-color comes from the diffraction of light through microscopic silica spheres. Formation takes millions of years.

Major deposits: Australia (90% of world's supply - Lightning Ridge, Coober Pedy, Queensland), Ethiopia (Welo), Mexico (Fire Opal), Brazil, and USA (Nevada).

Australian Black Opal from Lightning Ridge is the most valuable. Ethiopian Opal is known for vibrant play-of-color. Mexican Fire Opal displays transparent orange-red brilliance.

Opal Through History

Opal has been treasured since ancient times. The Romans considered Opal the most precious gemstone, calling it 'Opalus' meaning 'precious stone.' Ancient Greeks believed Opal gave the gift of prophecy and protection from disease.

Aboriginal Australians have legends of a rainbow creating Opal where it touched the earth. In medieval times, Opal was called the 'Eye Stone' and believed to improve eyesight. Arabic legends say Opal fell from heaven in flashes of lightning. The name comes from Sanskrit 'upala' meaning 'precious stone.'
