Caring for Your Amazonite

  • Cleansing: Water-safe for brief periods. Cleanse with sound bowls, sage smoke, or moonlight. Avoid prolonged water exposure and salt water.
  • Charging: Moonlight preferred. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight which may fade the color. Place on selenite or use sound.
  • Storage: Moderate hardness at Mohs 6-6.5. Store separately to prevent scratching from harder stones.
  • Durability: Can be brittle. Handle with care and avoid impacts or harsh chemicals.

Where Amazonite is Found

Amazonite forms in granite pegmatites and metamorphic rocks. The blue-green color comes from lead and water content within the feldspar structure. Despite its name, it's not found in the Amazon region.

Major deposits: Russia (finest quality), USA (Colorado, Virginia), Brazil, Madagascar, and Namibia.

Russian Amazonite is considered the finest, displaying vibrant blue-green color. Colorado Amazonite is also highly prized for its quality and color intensity.

Amazonite Through History

Amazonite has been used since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians used it extensively - it was found in Tutankhamun's tomb and was carved into jewelry, amulets, and the Book of the Dead inscribed on Amazonite tablets.

Pre-Columbian South American cultures used Amazonite for ornamental and ceremonial purposes. The stone was named after the Amazon River, though ironically, no significant deposits have been found there. Some believe it was confused with jade or other green stones from the region.

In ancient Mesopotamia, Amazonite was associated with the goddess Tiamat. Today, it's valued for its calming energy and ability to help speak truth with compassion.
