Caring for Your Topaz
- Cleansing: Water-safe but use caution. Brief rinse is okay. Prefer sound bowls, sage smoke, or moonlight. Avoid prolonged water exposure.
- Charging: Moonlight preferred. Avoid direct sunlight as Topaz can fade, especially pink and yellow varieties. Selenite or sound charging is ideal.
- Storage: Hard at Mohs 8 but has perfect cleavage (can split easily). Store separately in padded containers. Avoid impacts.
- Durability: Hard but brittle. Can fracture or chip if struck. Handle with care and avoid sudden temperature changes.
Where Topaz is Found
Topaz forms in igneous rocks, particularly granite pegmatites, and in hydrothermal veins. Most Topaz is colorless or pale blue when mined. Many commercial blue Topaz stones are heat-treated or irradiated to enhance color. Imperial Topaz gets its color from chromium.
Major deposits: Brazil (largest producer, Imperial Topaz), Pakistan, Russia, Sri Lanka, USA, Nigeria, Madagascar, and Myanmar.
Brazilian Imperial Topaz from Ouro Preto is the most valuable. Pakistani Topaz is known for exceptional clarity. Russian Topaz has historical significance.
Topaz Through History
The name 'Topaz' may come from the Sanskrit 'tapas' meaning fire, or from the Greek island Topazios. Ancient Egyptians believed Topaz was colored by the golden glow of Ra, the sun god. Ancient Greeks thought it gave strength.
Romans associated Topaz with Jupiter, their god of the sun. During the Middle Ages, Topaz was believed to heal physical and mental disorders and prevent death. Imperial Topaz was named after the Russian Czars who claimed exclusive rights to the pink Topaz mined in Russia. It's mentioned in the Bible as one of the stones in the Breastplate of Aaron.
