Tektites form when meteorites impact Earth, melting terrestrial rock and ejecting it into the atmosphere. As the molten material falls back to Earth, it cools into glass. Each variety comes from a specific impact event millions of years ago.
Major deposits: Czech Republic (Moldavite - 15 million years old), Libya/Egypt (Libyan Desert Glass - 29 million years old), Australia (Australite), Southeast Asia (Indochinite), and USA (Bediasites).
Moldavite from the Czech Republic is the most sought-after, formed from the Ries crater impact. Libyan Desert Glass may be from an airburst or comet impact.
