Caring for Your Sodalite

- Charging: Moonlight preferred. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight which may fade the blue color. Place on selenite or use sound.
- Storage: Moderate hardness at Mohs 5.5-6. Store separately to prevent scratching from harder stones.
- Durability: Can be brittle. Handle with care and avoid impacts. Keep away from harsh chemicals.
Where Sodalite is Found
Sodalite forms in igneous rocks, particularly in nepheline syenites and related alkaline rocks. It often occurs alongside other sodium-rich minerals and can form in massive deposits or as crystals.
Major deposits: Brazil, Canada (Ontario - finest quality), Namibia, Russia, USA (Maine, Arkansas), India, and Myanmar.
Canadian Sodalite is considered the finest quality, displaying rich royal blue color with attractive white veining. Brazilian specimens often show deeper navy tones.
Sodalite Through History
Sodalite was relatively unknown until large deposits were discovered in Ontario, Canada in 1891. It was then used to decorate Marlborough House in London, bringing it to prominence. However, Sodalite has been found in ancient sites, suggesting earlier use.
The name comes from its high sodium content. Indigenous peoples of the regions where it was found used it for ceremonial purposes and as a stone of truth and wisdom.
In modern times, Sodalite gained popularity in the 1960s and 70s as interest in metaphysical properties of stones grew. Today, it's valued for enhancing logic, promoting truth, and calming the mind, making it popular among students, teachers, and anyone seeking mental clarity.
