Rhodonite forms in metamorphic rocks and hydrothermal veins where manganese-rich solutions crystallize. The characteristic black veining is manganese oxide that formed during the crystallization process or as weathering.

Russian Rhodonite from the Urals is considered the finest, often displaying deep rose-red color with minimal black veining. Australian specimens often show beautiful pink and black patterns.
Rhodonite Through History
Rhodonite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 1790s and quickly became a favorite of Russian royalty. The name comes from the Greek word 'rhodon' meaning rose. Russian artisans carved it into elaborate decorative objects, and it became known as the 'Eagle Stone' because eagles in the region were said to carry small pieces to their nests.
