Aragonite was first formally described as a distinct mineral species in 1797 by Abraham Gottlob Werner, based on specimens from Molina de Aragón in the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain. The Aragon region has been producing fine aragonite specimens for centuries, and Spanish aragonite remains among the most collectible and scientifically significant of all aragonite varieties.
