Sardonyx
About Sardonyx
Sardonyx is one of the oldest known gemstones, prized since antiquity for its striking banded appearance β alternating layers of sard (a reddish-brown to orange chalcedony) and onyx (black or white chalcedony) creating bold, contrasting stripes of warm and cool tones. Used for thousands of years in cameos, seals, and amulets by ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and beyond, Sardonyx carries a rich historical legacy as a stone of strength, protection, and moral virtue. It is a grounding, stabilising stone that encourages integrity, discipline, and the courage to live by your values.

Sardonyx Through History
Sardonyx was one of the most prized gemstones of the ancient world. Roman soldiers wore Sardonyx engraved with the image of Mars, god of war, believing it would bring courage and protection in battle. It was used extensively for cameos and intaglios throughout the Greek and Roman periods, and remains one of the traditional birthstones for August. The British Crown Jewels contain several notable Sardonyx cameos dating to the Renaissance period.
